Volcanic formations of the Roman Campagna

Volcanoes and lava, located between the lake and Bolsenskim Hernikskimi mountains, despite their large number, does not occupy any significant space. On the contrary, tuffs, formed of loose volcanic products are widely distributed, they represent a solid pokro entire campaign, interrupted only in relatively high places. Just south of the formations, however, a short distance, further to the southeast lies Rocca Monfina even further Flegreyskie field and, finally, Vesuvius, an extreme member of this long line of volcanoes, active and now, here suddenly cut off the chain: it is blocked path limestone mountains of Sorrento, representing the Apennine foothills, is - the so-called chain Monte Sant'Angelo. Further, to the extreme tip of Calabria, did not see a trace of the latest eruptions. As mentioned above, this long line of volcanoes is accompanied by a chain of the Apennines, and lies outside the area, he placed along the steep cliffs south-western side of them, on the contrary, on the other side of the ridge, where it forms a shelving slopes gradually down to the north-eastern coast of the peninsula, the volcanoes are absent. It is noticed that the series of volcanoes and in many other places are on the side of fold mountains, which falls cliff; importance of this fact we will find out below. The only exception is the extinct volcano of vultures in Melfi, located east of Mount Vesuvius. He is already on the other side of the Apennines. Subsequently, we explain the geological features of its position in comparison with other Italian volcanoes: Now we note that the vultures reach enormous size, exceed the height of Vesuvius (1329 m) and has a large circular crater in the middle of which there are two small lakes.
