Solvent power of water, the increasing presence of more carbon dioxide absorbed by it, acts chemically on the rocks and makes them decay. Every drop of rain falling on the ground, underground every key, every stream and river are devastating, and the joint work of their much greater work of the sea, which beats the shore, also erode and destroy them. This blurring processes (erosion and denudation, as they are called) are among the most important geological figures. There is no such solid rock, which would not yield to their action, there is no mountain range, which would oppose them. All the highest mountains of the earth belong to the relatively recent geological formations: the mountain peaks, formed in ancient times, collapsed. Flowing water carves its bed of rocks, as it can be seen in the Colorado River. In this case, erosion is sometimes small, sometimes formed deep valleys, what, eg, the famous canyons of the Colorado River system: in some places the bed, washed the river in a very solid rock, it reaches depths of up to 6000 feet. Often accompanied by erosion of another very important phenomenon: on the sides of the river valleys formed terraces, which correspond to the individual or the period of the whole process, or owe their appearance to the existence of the beach strata of the more solid and permanent rock.
